Teaching Philosophy
Children are naturally inquisitive, it’s true because they ask why after you give them direction or an answer to a question they asked. I think students should follow that natural inquisition and experiment with something new, they can learn from their own trial and error to understand why something is the way that it is or learn how to do something in a different way. I believe in the constructivist idea that students have their own experiences and identity when they come into the classroom, they bring the outside into the classroom and it is up to the teacher to relate to them for them to learn. Adapting to the student and learning their experience contributes to a positive class but gives the student a resource, someone that they can trust, help them learn, and go to when they don't understand.

Drawing & Painting (11-13 years old)
Student Work
This class was a Drawing and Painting class for students 11-13 years of age. I asked the students to choose an object that they had an emotional attachment to and create a portrait. Students learned about composition, proportion, and mood through photography, contour drawing, and intentional lighting. At the end of the project students had to write a statement about the mood that they wanted to create with their drawing and why their object was important to them. Students worked on this project over six class periods, I saw the students for one hour a week.

Student Work
This was an in person class of 12-14 year old students, in this class students focused on the theme of community. We talked about the different aspects of what community is to them, and what it can be for others. Students were engaged through Figure Drawing, Relief Printmaking, and Neighborhood Perspective Paintings.
Project One
Figure Drawing
Students were to draw a figure using only contour line through gesture drawing. Students were given limited amount of time to draw the figure’s pose and capture fine details.
Project Two
Community & Printmaking
Students were asked to think about their interests and what communities they identify, what does their community promote and what can printmaking do for communities.
Project Three
Neighborhood Paintings
Students were to draw a neighborhood scene or a place within their neighborhood. Students combined skills of perspective drawing, deconstructing complex objects into simple shapes, and watercolor techniques to bring life into their work.
